Peach and Blueberries

Today I learned, muffins are not congruent to cupcakes. -Fifi

It’s been a really long time, but I dug my perler beads back out to make a present I’ve been planning to make since June. Friends of mine in California just had their first child, a beautiful baby girl named Kathryn. When my nephew was born, I made him a special perler piece: all 26 letters of the alphabet with Zelda items each mounted on 4×4 canvases. That project started a desire within me to make custom perler art for baby gifts. So I’d been planning to make this large perler of Peach mounted on canvas for little Kathryn.

I developed the template for this piece by using a gif I found of Peach running. I freeze framed it in between her steps to get a perfect standing still pose. From here, I outlined it in black. When I got to the bottom of the skirt, I didn’t like how the shape or shading was done, so I drew my own outline a bit and filled it in with what looked good to me.

I have yet to decide what to paint on the canvas. I contemplated filling it up with companion cubes and writing “the cake is a lie,” but that might be a bit too morbid for an infant’s present. I might do a sky blue to compliment Peach’s eyes and brooch and paint a few clouds.

While I was finishing this up, I also took on a baking adventure. I bought 2 pints of blueberries on sale. They were in the fridge a few days and started to get a tad squishy. There was no way my husband and I could eat all of them before they went bad, so I resolved to make blueberry muffins. I found a simple recipe and doubled it.

Today I learned that muffins are not congruent to cupcakes. I filled the muffin pans to the brim so I’d get nice muffin tops. Yep. I got huge muffin tops. So big, in fact, they nearly baked into one giant muffin across the pan. I let them cool for half an hour before trying to dig them out of the pan. They were so top-heavy that, unless I pried them out with a fork, the muffin top would separate from the bottom. I wanted to bring them to work, but they were not appealing.

That’s not to say they weren’t delicious. They were delightful. Everyone’s favorite part of blueberry muffins is the top anyway. The crumb topping was on point. I had two straight out of the pan with several pads butter. If anyone knows how many calories I consumed, I don’t want to know. So I didn’t bring them to work, but I am not complaining.
